Author's Note

Both before and during my 10-year tenure consulting full-time to CEDIA, I worked extensively with HDBaseT, 1G AV-over-IP, and related technologies. A few examples of finished projects include:

I've always tried to take a balanced, agnostic, facts-based approach.

 

Lately, though, I've heard some integrators say that AV-over-IP "must be best because it's the latest technology," or words to that effect. As a long-time advocate for maximizing video integrity and user experience, I felt this warranted a thorough investigation into the real benefits and/or compromises of HDBaseT versus 1G AV-over-IP in today's commercial AV settings. Both are equally current technologies with very distinct points of difference, and each should be evaluated on its own merits, namely suitability for the application and end-user expectations, not perceptions.

 

In the interests of disclosure, I'll admit to some bias in researching and writing this paper, but only on two counts: user experience (above all else) and video performance.
